>> ^dgandhi: My take is that no democracy should allow the banning of specific religious symbols, banning all religiously themed towers(steeples, minarets, christmas trees > 5m), sure, only Muslim ones, not good.
We have fallen too far into the belief that democracy = right, which is plainly false. Sometimes, even often, democracy is wrong, that's why we have constitutional democracies, to protect minorities, and limit the destructive force of mob rule. It clearly didn't work here.
Couldn't have said it better.
On the one hand, we all talk about how stupid people in the world are...
On the other hand, we place so much faith in "the people."
>> ^Sagemind: Is the virtual world somehow tricking the brain beyond a reasonable doubt? Is the human mind designed/evolved enough to withstand the brainwashing that takes place when bombarded with digital stimuli?
Online Gaming, Second life, Virtual worlds, Chat rooms and Communities all seem to be a form of digital crack that we all joke about but are we actually sending false signals to our brains that are becoming so real that we can no longer distinguish between real and virtual?
Like with actual Crack, our brains are being rewarded with Dopamine every time we succeed at a positive interaction withing this new world. The chemical reward gets recorded in our brain and somehow starts registering Real-world responses up against the Virtual-world experiences.
It looks like the virtual reactions and responses are starting to outweigh the real world interactions causing our brains to make a deformed choice.
... Just my ramblings!
You ever read Neuromancer? Eventually the wealthy (this technology will not be available to the middle-class or the poor) will have their consciousness stored in computers that are hooked up to cloning devices. Virtual worlds will then shift over to become the natural environment for these people, turning the real world into the unnatural.
I'm not sure I understand your question fully, but if you're asking me for a ratio of goths to degenerate low-life then I would say 1: many. Aimless, jobless, intent-on-criminality pond life are legion in this country, although in part I suppose that's down to the government as unemployment is high and aspirations are low among the young in the less privileged parts of our society. Forget England, apparently Denmark is a very nice place to live (well at least according to a friend who spent a few months there) if you are looking for tolerant, friendly folk and a youth culture that doesn't revolve around loitering on the streets and haranguing members of the public. I'm starting to sound like the Daily Mail now, So I'd better shut up
In reply to this comment by ctrlaltbleach: Yes I have often thought that moving to England would be some kind of a dream. From hearing about this and what you have said maybe I was wrong. I really thought it would be the king of place where people could walk down the street at night and smile and say hi and be nice to everyone. A question for you. You say you live in the area. What do you think is the percentage of people that are goth or different according to the people who committed these crimes? Or do you know?

I live quite near to where this girl was killed. I'm afraid that any romantic notion you had of England doesn't exist any more - we are under siege from feckless, moronic, feral youths who engage in low levels of criminality (and the occasional high profile case) with near impunity. God help you if you ever decide to take one of the little bleeders down a peg or two, though, as you'll more than likely be the one who ends up banged up.

My parents took me to Otter Land once. Worst vacation ever; I got lost, the line-ups were hours long and I traded all my allowance for Otter Dollars, which weren't accepted anywhere.
I'm an atheist, and I believe in the possibility of consciousness transcending mortality. The difference is that I don't think that you have to behave in any particular fashion for that occur. No heaven, no hell, no reward, no punishment.
And it's a real shame too because there's loads of religious people out that who would most definitely going to hell.

>> ^GeeSussFreeK: >> ^longde: That is objectification of women, whether or not you agree with it.
There are no superhero plumbers in the real world, unlike women.
This isn't a real woman, nor is she in a real world. It's a fantasy land of make believe...doesn't objectification have to be of a real object?
No "to present as an object, esp. of sight, touch, or other physical sense; make objective; externalize.".
It doesn't matter if it's a real woman or not, this is a representation of a woman being presented as nothing but a plaything, and object to be looked at and prodded. This IS objectifying women. It's showing a woman not as a person but as an object... don't try and pretend that it's all fun and games, because really, it's kinda sick.
I personally have no issue with 'sex games' as long as the game doesn't make sex at all costs with no concern for the female character the aim. If it is presented as consensual and the woman is enjoying things too, then that's ok. It's these objectifying and rape type games that freak me out and scare me.
Really, how downtrodden, emasculated and powerless do Japanese men feel such that they need these outlets?
Japanese culture is often heralded as some shining beacon of perfectness, but underneath the sheen of 'respect' and order there seems to be an awfully sick and prevalent underbelly of a real need for power over women.
This is ridiculous. Is there nothing in the Swiss or EU constitution that prohibits a law that targets a specific religion? How on Earth did they even write this law, anyway? "If the people inside a building believe Jesus was the son of God, they can build really tall towers, but if they believe Jesus was only a prophet, they can not". Does the building permit for towers have a checkbox for allowable religions? Does an architectural review board decide if a tower is too Islamic-influenced versus Christian-influenced? It's preposterous.
